When I was seventeen we embarked on a college trip and we boarded the train to the city of Visakhapatnam. Having enjoyed the sea, the seafood and the scenic beauty, I vowed to visit this beautiful city once again. Memories flooded my mind and I felt drawn towards the waves of the sea and wanted to stroll once again along the golden beach. I spilled the beans to my hubby, a software engineer and lo and behold he was game for it! I spread the joy to my two wonder kids and they were keen to visit the zoological park apart from the other places in Visakhapatnam. Travelling with kids by train was also a great thrill them as they enjoyed the beautiful scenic vistas. I felt like a kid myself although I was a 29 year old female and a mother of two kids!
Our family stayed in my friend’s house on the beach road, where the sit-out faced the sea. The sunrise, sound of the waves and the cool morning breeze was a wonderful change. The steaming hot idlis, dosas, chutney and sambhar along with a cup of freshly brewed coffee satiated the foodie in me. Early in the evening we strolled along the beach, gathered few sea shells and played in the water. We decided to have food by the small eateries and the dhabas which serve authentic cuisines for a nominal price. The kids were also very excited as my friend promised to drive us to the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park.
This is the 2nd largest zoo in Andhra Pradesh and has over 400 varieties of animal species. We hopped on to an open top train with rubber wheels to watch the wild life. As we tugged along we watched the Indian tiger, deer, elephants, panthers, Asiatic leopard, the Himalayan black bear and lions and tigers. My kids giggled with glee as they saw monkeys in their enclosure swing from branches to grills and entertain visitors. The majestic white tiger, porcupine and giant squirrel were a delight. Though the crocodile and lizards seemed scary, the kids were intrigued by the turtle and the starred tortoise! The beauty of the birds, the array of colors and their chirping fascinated us and the kids were very happy to see the peafowl, doves, parakeets, the golden and silver necked pheasants. After all this, dinner of the local cuisine at Daspalla, the best restaurant in the city , added flavor to our holiday. Gracias! Adios!
