We went to visit Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal during our trip to the city and had a splendid time at the park. We had a cab take us to the park and the road leading to the National Park was very beautiful with green plants and forests on one side and the lake on the other side. The park is located on the southern part of the Upper Lake and it is open to the public from 7.00 am to 7.00 pm on all days of the week except for Fridays. The entrance fee is Rs.20 per person and if you want to take any photographs, you will have to pay Rs.40 for still camera and Rs.300 for video camera.
We reached the park after the lunch and after taking the entry fee we went inside. It was a large park of about 445 hectares in area and inhabits a large collection of animals, birds and plants. The carnivorous animals are kept in captivity while the herbivores are allowed to roam free in the park. They feed on the grass and other small plants that grow in the park.
The park allowed vehicles inside on payment of Rs.200 per vehicle. We opted to walk around getting a splendid view of the park. My kids felt very excited on seeing the tigers, panther, lions, hyena, snakes etc. They were put in separate enclosures with deep trenches and allowed to live in their natural habitat. The crocodile looked very menacing with their mouths open and we stood watching them for a while. The snakes were also very interesting to watch.
We also came across cheetal, black buck, sambar and many other herbivorous animal which roamed free in the park. Some of them came close enough that we could touch them. There was also a wide collection of butterflies in the park, which looked very colorful.
The birds in the park were very colorful and there were about 200 species of them. During the winter seasons a large number of migratory birds visit the park. We had a super time in the park and my kids really enjoyed their visit to the park.
