Mahalaxmi Temple, Kolhapur – The Grandeur of Spirituality

We reached at Kolhapur on a Sunday night. It was too late to reach the hotel and therefore we decided to start looking out places in Kolhapur on the next day. The next day was Monday and it was super energizing. I woke up my kids and we left the hotel at 9:00 a.m in the morning after having breakfast. That day I had decided to visit the Mahalaxmi Temple. After all it is always very nice to kick start the start of a journey with the blessings of God and Mahalaxmi temple is known for its spiritual values and people have splendid religious beliefs on this temple.

The existence of this temple and its history can be dated back to many centuries. The earliest Hindu puranas mentions facts about this temple and how it has built a strong connection in the hearts of the people even today is worth experiencing.  The Mahalaxmi temple is abode of Goddess Mahalaxmi and her consort Lord Vishnu are said to be residing there till now. The humanly desires get fulfilled with one ‘darshan’ of the Goddess in this temple and it is often said that few of the desires also become redemptive after a visit to the temple.

The temple was built in 700 A.D. and is perhaps one of the oldest pilgrimages of the city. The four armed crowned Goddess is established in the temple and is made from gemstone with 3 feet in height. The entire image of God weighs 40 kilograms and depicts divinity thoroughly. You would also find the divine shri yantra being installed in the walls of the temple.

This is an exquisitely carved temple and being one of the oldest ones in the history drags large number of people from all over the country.  The idol of the Goddess is worshipped for five times in a day starting from the wee hours to the ending of the day. You would also notice a Shivalingam and nandi within the shrine. Few other idols are also enshrined within the captivating shrine like Navagrahas, Tulja BHavani, Surya, Vitthal-Rakhmai and Mahishasuramardini. The tempting style of the Deccan architecture of the temple is calling one would definitely want to visit again and again.
